Son of Colonel. John Hodgson Nicholson and Lilian Mary Nicholson, of Moor House, Barmoor, West Ryton on Tyne, Co. Durham. Husband of Pamela Marjorie Nicholson, of East Oxted, Surrey. Brothers: Major N. E. Nicholson. Captain W. I. Nicholson. T. L. Nicholson.
Notes : Philip had previously served with the 50th Division in France before being transferred to the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. He was posted to the Middle East in October 1943. His wife served with the Women's Auxiliary Air Force during the war. The eldest brother, Captain W. I. Nicholson had been awarded the Military Cross. He had served with the Royal Artillery in Ceylon and had also seen action in World War 1. Major N. E. Nicholson, also of Moor House, was mentioned in despatches for his actions at Dunkirk whist serving with the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers. He was employed by the Stella Coal Company as general manager of Clara Vale Colliery. T. L. Nicholson had been awarded the Member of the British Empire (MBE) and was general manager of Alfreton Colliery, Derbyshire. The father of this notable family, Colonel John Hodgson. Nicholson, died in 1942. He had been an agent for Cowpen Coal Company for over forty years.
