Son of Joseph John Lish, of Fencote, Fenham, Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland. Joseph died in January 1922 and his obituary was published in the Blaydon Courier on 28th January 1922. Husband of Nancy Lish, daughter of the late Edward McLeod, of Natal, South Africa. |

John senior was a past president and gold medallist of the Society of Architects (London).
John R was educated at Singleton House School, Jesmond, Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland, Argyle House School, Sunderland, and at the De Aston School, Market Rasen, Lincolnshire. John enlisted with the 9th Bn Northumberland Fusiliers, 7th September 1914. He served with the British Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from 15th July 1915. He was wounded near Ypres, 9th February 1916, and spent one month in hospital recovering. He returned to active service and fought through the Somme battles of that year. He was gazetted 2nd Lieutenant in the 3rd Bn Lincolnshire Regiment, 30th May 1917. He was killed in action in Polygon Wood. His grave could not be found after the war ended. John was an all round sportsman, playing cricket, hockey, football, tennis and golf.
