Notes : |
William had been wounded in July 1916 (reported in the Blaydon Courier, Saturday 15th July 1916) but returned to active service when he recovered. Tragedy was to hit the family when, in October, 1912, their infant sons of 2 months, John and William, died within the space of 4 days. Another son, Thomas, aged 3 years, died 4 months later (2 children survived). A letter written by William to his sister, dated Tuesday 22nd January 1916, states that the Battalion were presently in billets resting. Men were singing and dancing and a good time was being had by all. William goes on to say that they had come up to the lines in mud and could not sleep at night because of the cold. He hoped they would all be home soon. |
