Notes : |
The parents received news of their son's death on New Year's Day, 1st January 1945.
Having enlisted in the Royal Artillery at the outbreak of war George later transferred to the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, and then onto the Staffords.
Before the war, George as a keen sportsman, played cricket for Clara Vale Colliery, often opening the bowling as a strike bowler. His father was a well known official of the Clara Vale Colliery Miners Lodge. He had to retire through ill health after giving twenty five years service as Treasurer, although he still assisted with the accident fund belonging to the Colliery.
A cousin, Joseph Gray from Crawcrook, was killed in action in August 1944, whilst serving with the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, aged 31 years.
