Edward was a former chorister at Greenside Parish Church. He was engaged to be married to Jean Parker, of 129 Thomas Terrace, Blaydon on Tyne, Co. Durham.
HM. Submarine Talisman left Gibraltar for passage to Malta on 10th September 1942, carrying supplies and spare parts. She was due in port no later than the 18th. Messages were received from the Submarine on the 14th but she failed to arrive in Malta. The Italians claimed to have sunk a Submarine on the 17th North West of Malta; this was believed to be the Talisman with the loss of all hands. No clear explanation has ever been established as to what happened to the Talisman. The Talisman had previously seen action in various locations. On the 3rd October 1941 she torpedoed and sank the Vichy-French passenger ship, Theophile Gautier, off Euboa Island, Greece.
