Son of Thomas and Jane Arscott of 9 High Row, Stargate, Ryton on Tyne, Co Durham (formerly of Stargate Cottages). James Williams Arscott, William's grandfather, died on 4th June 1916, aged 73. His grandmother, Mary Ann Arscott, died on 8th November 1916, aged 75. |

William enlisted on 16th April 1915, and was transferred to the Royal Marines for the Cyclist Company on 27th July 1915. He embarked with the Royal Marine Brigade, 5th December 1915 on HM Transport “Northlands”, arriving at Alexandria, Egypt, 17th December 1915. He joined the 1st Royal Marine Bn at Mudros, 26th January 1916. He served at Stavros between 22nd February and 15th April 1916. He Joined the British Expeditionary Force, 19th May 1916, serving in France. Willie's workmate at Stargate colliery, John William Brennan, was also killed whilst serving with the Royal Naval Division, in November 1916. |
