Nelson enlisted in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve on 11th August 1915. Whilst in action he sustained shell wounds. He received a fractured right forearm, wound to right side of neck, compound fracture of tibia and fibula and a fractured skull.
It is recorded that on the16th December 1915, 3rd Reserve Bn at Blandford, he did knowingly make a false declaration of the purpose of obtaining separation allowance. 14 days detention was the punishment.
