Joseph had already completed over four year's service and had successfully landed on the Normandy beaches on D Day, 6th June 1944.
A cousin from Crawcrook, Fusilier George Hall, was killed in action whilst serving with the North Staffordshire Regiment, December 1944, aged 30 years.
