By 1901 William seems to have been boarding with a Joseph Graham at Dale Street, Crawcrook.
He was a member of Ryton Social Club, Cross House, Ryton on Tyne, Co. Durham.
An interview took place on Saturday 7th February 2007 with Sarah Ann Hart (nee Marshall) aged 105. Sarah was born into a mining family at Emma Colliery Rows. She met and married her husband who had served with the Northumberland Fusiliers during World War 1. Sarah recalls seeing her uncle, William Dykes, returning from the pit after a hard days work and she remembers the tin baths the men bathed in, in front of a coal fire. She recalls the men leaving the village of Crawcrook and passing Emma Colliery going off to war in horses and traps. The soldiers were so happy and sang a long way to Tipperary whilst marching past the crowds of flag waving villagers. Sarah also recalls the sombre return of the soldiers at the end of the war. Her uncle, Willie Dykes, from Emmaville, and her cousin John William Marshall, from Crawcrook, were two of the men who failed to return, both were killed in action.
