When passing Browney Junction between Durham and Ferryhill the express crashed into some derailed trucks, and in turn derailed the express. The death toll from the accident was officially given as ten, with sixteen others seriously injured and dozens of other people suffering minor injuries. Chief Petty Officer Henry Carr, from Blaydon on Tyne, was returning home to be married; he also died in the crash. Norman's brother, Sergeant Roland Wilson, was killed as a result of a flying accident, June 1940, whilst serving with the RAF. Both Norman and Roland are buried near each other in Ryton Cemetery.
