Family Details:
Son of William and Hannah Waugh, of 6 Edington Gardens, Clara Vale, Ryton on Tyne, Co. Durham.
Notes : The Waugh family moved to Clara Vale around 1892-1893 from the Cumberland area. Joseph was the 9th child of 17 and was educated at Clara Vale Colliery School. He had emigrated to Wellington, New Zealand, with his uncle Jim Waugh, around 1902, then he moved on to Australia to find work. Joseph enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force, 3rd December 1915, at West Maitland. He embarked on the troopship “Benalla” from Sidney, 1st May 1916. He disembarked at Plymouth, Devon, 9th July 1916. He then proceeded again overseas from Southampton to France, 21st November 1916. Joseph was well known in religious circles locally, being a Wesleyan Methodist. He was a member of the church choir. On commenting in a local paper about the death of Joseph the article mentioned a Joseph Mills, from Crawcrook, had also being wounded.
