Family Details:
Second son of Graham and Mary Wardle of 6 Chamberlain Street, Crawcrook, Ryton on Tyne, Co. Durham. Eldest son was Henry.
Notes : John's family were connected in working for the Co-operative Stores. His father was manager of the Co-op store at Main Street, Crawcrook. John enlisted in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve at HMS Calliope, Elswick, Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland, on 14th November 1914. He served on the Gallipoli Peninsula, Turkey, with Hawke Bn, Royal Naval Division. He became unwell and was admitted to hospital at Gallipoli suffering from gastritis and pains in the head, 20th September 1915. He was then transferred to the Hospital Ship Dongola and from there to the Royal Naval Hospital at Malta, 25th September 1915. He was invalided to England on the Hospital Ship Gascon 15th October 1915. Following treatment he was discharged from the Royal Naval Hospital at Portland, Dorset. He was then transferred to the Royal Navy, 8th April 1916, for the duration of hostilities. He was posted to HMS Victory (shore base) as a Stoker 2nd Class, from April to July 1916. He then joined HMS Britannia, 25th July 1916. He was promoted to Stoker 1st Class, February 1917. His character and ability is given as very good and satisfactory, respectively.
