Family Details:
Son of Newton and Susannah Tunstall of 13 Simpson Street, Crookhill, Ryton on Tyne, Co. Durham. Husband of Jane Tunstall, formerly of 9 Crookhill Terrace, Ryton on Tyne, Co. Durham. John had married Jane (nee Robson) at Gateshead Registry Office, 17th October 1914. Their first child was Susannah, born at Winlaton, 6th May 1915.
Notes : John enlisted in the colours at Newcastle upon Tyne, 27th September 1915. He served with his unit in the Persian Gulf between February and June 1916. Having been wounded he was invalided home on 13th June 1916. He had gunshot wounds to his right forearm with a compound fracture of the ulna. John entered Alderhay Orthopaedic Hospital, Leeds, Yorkshire, in the latter part of 1916 to have surgery. The ulna nerve was operated on and a resection carried out. He was discharged from the army 26th December 1917 as being medically unfit for war service.
