Son of Richard and Catherine McShane of 49 Clifford Terrace, Crawcrook, Ryton on Tyne, Co. Durham. Husband of the late Dorothy Agnes McShane (nee Miller).
Richard's father was born at Prudhoe, Northumberland, and worked in the hotel trade. His work would take him to other parts of the country during the summer season, and he would return home off season. He was for a time employed at the Royal Turks Head Hotel, Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland. Richard's mother was born in Ireland. Other siblings were: John, born Windermere, Cumberland. Catherine, born Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland. Peter, born Prudhoe, Northumberland. Leonora Mary, Constance, and Sarah Agnes were all born at Crawcrook, Co. Durham.

Richard and Dorothy were married at Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church, Chopwell, Co Durham, 29thJuly 1918. Dorothy died on 10th August 1918 as a result of complications pre-childbirth. Richard was present when his wife died at 6 Fell View, Crawcrook.
Richard had attested in the Irish Guards on 11th December 1915 and was directly transferred to the Army Reserve. He was mobilized and posted on 27th April 1918. He spent a total of one hundred and sixty four days in service.
Richard's brother, Peter, having briefly been with the Northumberland Fusiliers, served with the Royal Naval Division in Gallipoli, Turkey, and France. He was examined by the National Service Medical Board at Newcastle upon Tyne as invalided, and was discharged unserviceable on 17th March 1919.
