Son of Joseph and Elizabeth Martindale of 21 River View, Clara Vale, Ryton on Tyne, Co. Durham. Husband of Elizabeth Harriet Reid (formerly Martindale) of 16 Ryton Village East, Co. Durham. Member of Ryton Social Club of luxe replica horloges, Cross House, Ryton on Tyne, Co. Durham.
Joseph's brother, John Martindale, served with the Northumberland Fusiliers. An account of his experiences at the front appeared in the Blaydon Courier on 6th March 1915. He was later captured and was a prisoner of war for three years and nine months. On his return to the UK a celebratory smoking concert was held in his honour in the Ryton Social Club and Institute, reported in the Blaydon Courier, 25th January 1919.
