Family Details:
Son of John E and Sarah Jane Simpson of 13 Bell View, Crawcrook, Ryton on Tyne, Co. Durham (later of Warren Township, Macomb County, Michigan, USA).
Notes : Edward enlisted in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve on 17th April 1915. He left the area for training at Crystal Palace, London, 19th April 1915. He was drafted from the 1st Reserve Bn, Blandford, to Drake Bn, Mediterranean Expeditionary Force (as a machine gunner), 5th December 1915. He joined the Battalion for duty at Mudros, 10th January 1916. He embarked on the troopship Minnewaska at Mudros, for France, 15th May 1916, and disembarked at Marseilles, 20th May 1916. He was transferred to the 2nd Brigade Machine Gun Company from 1st Drake Bn, 28th June 1916. Edward's character is recorded as very good and his ability as satisfactory.
