John was educated at Blaydon Secondary School, Blaydon on Tyne, Co. Durham. His father was a well known colliery official and deputy overman at Emma Colliery.
HMS Stanley was formerly an overage American destroyer (USS McCalla) that was transferred to the Royal Navy in October 1940. She was sunk in the Atlantic Ocean by a single torpedo fired by U 574. The ship exploded and sunk within twelve minutes.
