Son of Robert and Mary Calder of Crawcrook, Ryton on Tyne, Co. Durham.
Notes : Ian trained at the Prince of Wales Sea Training School which was used to prepare and train boys for service in the Merchant Navy. The school was operated by the British Sailors Society. The SS Empire Crossbill was a 5,463 ton cargo ship which was part of a convoy running from Philadelphia to Hull. She was torpedoed by the German U-Boat U-82, East of Cape Farewell. All 48 crew members lost their lives.
