John enlisted in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve at Newcastle upon Tyne, 14th May, 1915. He trained at Crystal Palace and Blandford, Dorset, (trained bomb thrower) prior to serving in the Gallipoli campaign. He was admitted to the Hospital Ship 'Lanfranc' 11th December 1915 with bomb wounds to both legs. He was then transferred and admitted to the 19th General Hospital, Alexandria, Egypt, 15th December, 1915.
He was transferred to the Convalescent Camp, Glymenopoulo, 30th December 1916.
He was discharged to Mustapha, 1st January, 1916, and then embarked on HMS Mars for Alexandria, 22nd January 1916.
He rejoined Hawke Bn in February 1916 and sailed for France on the Troopship 'Franconia', 18th May 1916.
He disembarked at Marseilles, France, 23rd May 1916. John was reported as wounded and missing in action.
John's workmate, also from Stargate Colliery, Willie Arscott, died of wounds 29th November 1916 whilst serving with the Royal Marine Light Infantry.
