Son of William and the late Jane Leeming, of 12 Chamberlain Street, Crawcrook, Ryton on Tyne, Co. Durham (formerly of Clara Vale). Brothers: Joseph Wilson, Robert, and John. Sisters: Matilda, Jane Ann, Margaret, Mary, and Mabel.
Notes : William's mother, Jane, died in July 1915 as a result of an accident at Newcastle Central Station. She fell over some building materials breaking her leg. She was taken to Newcastle Infirmary where she died. William's brother, Joseph, was killed in action whilst serving with the 19th Battalion Durham Light Infantry, 25th August 1917, aged 35 years. William enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force at West Maitland, New South Wales, 15th December 1915. He embarked from Sidney on board A24 Benalla, 1st May 1916. He disembarked at Plymouth, Devon, 9th July 1916. He proceeded overseas to France on 21st November 1916. He was wounded in action and admitted to hospital on 14th March 1917. He was transferred to England and admitted to the 3rd London General Hospital suffering from gunshot wounds to his forearm, and contusion. He was discharged from hospital, 14th April 1917. He was again admitted to hospital, sick, 21st August 1917. He rejoined his unit on the 13th September. He was again wounded in action and admitted to hospital, 12th October 1917. He was transferred to England and admitted to the East Sussex Hospital suffering from gunshot wounds to his arm and buttocks, 22nd October 1917. He was transferred to the 3rd Auxiliary Hospital, 3rd May 1918. He was discharged from hospital on 8th May 1918 and returned to active service. It is recorded that William was killed by an enemy shell near Bray-sur-Somme
