Thomas had enlisted in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, 9th January 1915. He was drafted to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, 24th June 1915, with Drake Bn, Royal Naval Division. He was invalided back to the UK, 4th December 1915, following a bout of diarrhoea. He was transferred to Stoker Unit, Royal Navy, 14th April 1916. HMS Penarth was patrolling off the North East coast when she hit a mine, resulting in the loss of all hands. |
