The family were prominently connected with the Methodists at Crawcrook where his late father, James, was a well known local preacher. John enlisted in the RAF on 16th March 1940. He was on board Blenheim Z7310 that was undertaking anti shipping duties when the aircraft was hit by flak. The Blenheim crashed into the sea killing all of the crew. It is believed the aircraft was shot down over the Hook of Holland where John had flown many missions before.
