Family Details:
Son of Mary Gainford, formerly Batey, and the late George Batey, of 20 Clifford Terrace, Crawcrook, Ryton on Tyne, Co. Durham. Sisters; Isabella, Mary J, Hannah, Sarah, and Frances. Brother; Joshua. Grandparents; Ralph and Abigail Batey of West Wylam, Northumberland.
Notes : Served in the Second Boer War, South Africa, 1899-1902. Ralph enlisted in the colours on 10th August 1914 at Newcastle upon Tyne. He spent a period of time during 1915 in Connaught Hospital with illness. He suffered a shrapnel wound to his right arm during 1915. A telegram was received by his mother in October 1917 explaining that Ralph had been wounded again with shell fragments to his right thigh. He died later in Number 41 Casualty Clearing Station, France. His personal articles that were returned to his mother included a disc, religious medallion, mirror and case, scissors, badge and two numerals.
