Family Details:
Adopted grandson of Stephen and Elizabeth Purvis of 80 Addison Cottages, Addison Colliery. Later of Simpson's Memorial Aged Miners Homes, Emmaville, West Ryton on Tyne, Co. Durham. Elizabeth Purvis died in July 1940, aged 87 years. Her husband, Stephen, had died in December 1937, a year after celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary. They brought up a family of 11 sons and a daughter, Sons: Edward, Stephen, John, William, Matthew, Joseph George, Henry, Robert Wilkinson, Thomas, Albert, and Arthur Lee. Three other sons were adopted. Daughter: Hannah.
Notes : Joseph's brother, Arthur Lee, died of dysentery 16th September whilst serving with the Royal Naval Division. His other brother, Joseph Albert, was killed in action 15th April 1915 whilst serving with the Lincolnshire Regiment. Other members of the Purvis family lost their lives during WW2. Thomas Charles Purvis (son of Stephen) was killed in action 31st May 1940 whilst serving with the Durham Light Infantry. William Atkinson Purvis (son of Henry) died as a result of an accident 16th February 1942 whilst serving with the Royal Artillery.
